Story of Warli Art

The villages of the Warli tribe was spread across the Thane district of Maharashtra state. The innate artists and their history of painting is over 1200 years old. Traditionally, the drawings on the walls of their huts are done by the women of the tribe and are deeply inspired by their surroundings and everyday life. These wall murals are created on layered walls of red mud or cow dung and the figures are painted with a mixture of rice flour that can be washed off and repainted every season.

The Warli 's traditional life represents their relationship, or more accurately, their co-existence with nature. The Warli claim that everything interacts in this world: human behaviour and spatial equilibrium. The tacit special communication between human beings and deities preserves universal peace.
